Hike the Fimmvörðuháls pass between two glaciers — Iceland's most dramatic one-day trail

This 25km trail connects Skógafoss waterfall to the highland valley of Þórsmörk, climbing past twenty-six cascades, then emerging onto a surreal high-altitude lava field created by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption — still steaming in places — wedged between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers on either side. The contrast of jet-black lava, blinding white ice, and neon-green moss is unlike anything else in the world; on a clear day you can see the entire south coast of Iceland laid out below you. It's harder and less touristed than the famous Landmannalaugar trails, rewarding hikers with genuine solitude at the top.
